Are we right for you?
We want to *highly encourage* scholars from underrepresented groups in STEM to apply, especially Black/ African American, Latinx, Native American /Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and dis/differently-abled community. Our Lab Philosophy states that to produce great science, we must foster a supportive, diverse and inclusive environment that prioritizes teamwork, positivity, and respect - one in which team members not only feel welcomed but encouraged to bring their whole, intersectional and authentic selves to the lab.
Birds & Brains: Our lab is interested in the biological mechanisms that underlie reproductive behaviors and respond to human-induced environmental change. We take a broad, integrative approach, as opposed to a reductionist one, to investigate these topics at the level of the whole organism, from genome to phenome to evolution. Currently, the lab is funded under the National Science Foundation, and Dr. Calisi is considering both students and postdocs interested in investigating the reproductive biology and genomics of avian parental care and lactation.
Banter: Currently, our lab is expanding our focus to include the study and practice of science communication. Dr. Calisi will be accepting students and postdocs interested in innovating how we can reach broader audiences and help to break down the ivory tower. She will consider applicants who want to make this their focus, as well as those who want to integrate their biological research in the lab with science communication.
UC Davis: UC Davis is an incredible place to study science, with one of the nation's most highly ranked programs in Animal Behavior as well as for their support for women in STEM. Resources for mentorship, facilities, and collaborative opportunities abound, and diversity of thought, culture, and experience are valued. If our research and environment sound right for you, please see below for more information.

Postdoctoral Scholars
Dr. Calisi welcomes postdoctoral researchers working on a variety of systems and questions. If you are interested in working in her lab, please email her ([email protected]) to discuss opportunities. When specific grant-funded positions become available, she will post that information here. Candidates interested in applying for the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, the Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, the UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, and/or other programs should contact Dr. Calisi about sponsorship.
PhD Students
Dr. Calisi encourages her graduate students to study lab-related topics that fill important gaps in scientific research and push the field(s) forward. She views her job as your advisor as one in which she provides the resources and encouragement you need to position yourself as a competitive applicant for the career you wish to pursue, academic or other. Dr. Calisi values a strong work ethic and independence, including the ability to seek expertise outside of the lab when needed. Currently, Dr. Calisi is accepting PhD students through the Animal Behavior Graduate Group program at UC Davis. Interested candidates should email Dr. Calisi at [email protected] and include their relevant experience and interest, as well as a CV. People from underrepresented and underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply. To read more about the many graduate programs that the UC Davis College of Biological Science offers, check out our Graduate Student Brochure.
Undergraduate Students
The Calisi Lab is accepting undergraduate students in their 1st or 2nd year to intern in the lab on either a volunteer basis, for course credit, or for salary (situation dependent). We are seeking motivated students who can contribute a minimum of one year of internship, with the expectation of working in the lab and/or at field station for a minimum of 10hr/week. Currently, we are seeking students who are interested in learning about bird behavior and helping with husbandry of our dove colony at the field station. As these skills become mastered, there is room for growth within the lab assisting in various projects, assays, and field collections in significant ways and potentially conducting a senior thesis. Check out some of the great work our undergraduates have produced here. Contact Dr. Calisi ([email protected]) with your year, major, course and/or experience, 1-2 reference contacts, schedule of availability, and what you hope to gain from this experience. People from underrepresented and underserved communities are especially encouraged to apply.
